Research and Publication Ethics

Publication Ethics

The Journal of Animal Behaviour and Biometeorology (JABB) adheres to the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines. We fully adhere to its Code of Conduct and to its Best Practice Guidelines.

The editors of this journal enforce a rigorous blind peer-review process together with strict ethical policies and standards to ensure to add high-quality scientific works to the field of scholarly publication. The editors of JABB take such publishing ethics issues very seriously and are trained to proceed with a zero-tolerance policy in cases of plagiarism, data falsification, image manipulation, inappropriate authorship credit, and the like, do arise.

Authors wishing to publish their papers in JABB must abide by the following:

  • Any facts that might be perceived as a possible conflict of interest of the author(s) must be disclosed in the paper prior to submission.

  • Authors should accurately present their research findings and include an objective discussion of the significance of their findings.

  • Data and methods used in the research need to be presented in sufficient detail in the paper, so that other researchers can replicate the work.

  • Raw data should preferably be publicly deposited by the authors before submission of their manuscript. Authors need to at least have the raw data readily available for presentation to the referees and the editors of the journal, if requested.

  •  Simultaneous submission of manuscripts to more than one journal is not tolerated.

  • Republishing content that is not novel is not tolerated (for example, an English translation of a paper that is already published in another language will not be accepted).

  • If errors and inaccuracies are found by the authors after publication of their paper, they need to be promptly communicated to the editors of this journal so that appropriate actions can be taken. Please refer to our policy regarding the publication of publishing erratum/corrections.

  • Your manuscript should not contain any information that has already been published. If you include already published figures or images, please obtain the necessary permission from the copyright e/or cite the source.

  • Plagiarism, data fabrication and image manipulation are not tolerated. This journal uses software for plagiarism detection. Plagiarism is not acceptable in JABB submissions. Plagiarism includes copying text, ideas, images, or data from another source, even from your own publications, without giving any credit to the original source. Reuse of text that is copied from another source must be between quotes and the original source must be cited. If a study's design or the manuscript's structure or language has been inspired by previous works, these works must be explicitly cited. If plagiarism is detected during the peer review process, the manuscript may be rejected. If plagiarism is detected after publication, we may publish a correction or retract the paper.

  • Image files must not be manipulated or adjusted in any way that could lead to misinterpretation of the information provided by the original image. If irregular image manipulation is identified and confirmed during the peer review process, we may reject the manuscript. If irregular image manipulation is identified and confirmed after publication, we may correct or retract the paper.

Our editors will investigate any allegations of publication misconduct and may contact the authors' institutions or funders if necessary. If evidence of misconduct is found, appropriate action will be taken to correct or retract the publication. Authors are expected to comply with the best ethical publication practices when publishing with JABB.

Research Ethics

Ethics Statement on the Animals Used in Experiments

Articles submitted for possible publication in JABB must respect the animal welfare during research. International, national and/or institutional guidelines for animal care and use should be followed by the authors. Studies must be approved by a research ethics committee at the institution. Please provide the ethics committee name and the authorization number. In the manuscript, the Material and Methods section should start with the following statement:

"Animal care and handling procedures followed the guidelines of the Ethics Committee on the Use of Animals in Experiments. (Include committee name e authorization number)."

Human subjects

If your study includes human subjects, please provide name of the ethical committee approving these experiments, confirm authors' compliance with all relevant ethical regulations, and confirm that written consent has been obtained from all patients.

Informing Consent: I confirm that I have obtained all consents required by applicable law for the publication of any personal details or images of patients, research subjects, or other individuals that are used. I have retained a written copy of all such consents and I agree to provide JABB with copies of the consents or evidence that such consents have been obtained if requested.

Declaration of interest

All authors should disclose any personal and/or financial relationships with other people or organizations that may improperly influence their paper. Examples of potential competing interests include employment, consultancies, stock ownership, honoraria, paid expert testimony, patent applications/registrations, and grants or other funding.

A conflict of interest statement should be provided in the manuscript file immediately prior to the References section.

Conflicts of Interest: The authors declare no conflicts of interest.

Role of the funding source

You are requested to identify who provided financial support for the conduct of the research and/or preparation of the article and to briefly describe the role of the sponsor(s), if any, in study design; in the collection, analysis and interpretation of data; in the writing of the report; and in the decision to submit the paper for publication.

Authorship

JABB follows the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) guidelines which state that, in order to qualify for authorship of a manuscript, the following criteria should be observed:

  • Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work

  • Drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content

  • Final approval of the version to be published

  • Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved

  • Those who contributed to the work but do not qualify for authorship should be listed in the acknowledgments. More detailed guidance on authorship is given by the International Council of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE).

Any change to the author list should be approved by all authors including any who have been removed from the list. The corresponding author should act as a point of contact between the editor and the other authors and should keep co-authors informed and involve them in major decisions about the publication. We reserve the right to request confirmation that all authors meet the authorship conditions.

Changes to authorship

Authors are expected to consider carefully the list and order of authors before submitting their manuscript and provide the definitive list of authors at the time of the original submission. Any addition, deletion, or rearrangement of author names in the authorship list should be made only if approved by the journal Editor.

Before the manuscript has been accepted: requests to add or remove an author, or to rearrange the author names, must be sent to the JABB Team and Editorial Office (jabb@ufersa.edu.br) from the corresponding author and must include: (a) the reason the name should be added or removed, or the author names rearranged and (b) written confirmation (e-mail) signed by all authors that they agree with the addition, removal or rearrangement. In the case of addition or removal of authors, this includes confirmation from the author being added or removed. Requests that are not sent by the corresponding author will be forwarded by the Journal Manager to the corresponding author, who must follow the procedure as described above. Note that: (1) Journal Managers will inform the Journal Editors of any such requests and (2) processing of the manuscript is suspended until authorship has been agreed.

After the manuscript has been accepted: only in exceptional circumstances will the Editor consider the addition, deletion, or rearrangement of authors. To carry out this nates correction of the online publication, there will be a charge of $ 50 USD.

If the manuscript has already been published online, any requests approved by the Editor will result in an Erratum, implying the payment of an APC (with current value) since it is a new document to be published online.

Reviewers recommendation

The authors can recommend potential reviewers. The editor will check to make sure there are no conflict of interests before contacting those reviewers, and will not consider those with competing interests. Reviewers are asked to declare any conflicts of interest. Authors can also enter the names of potential peer reviewers they wish to exclude from consideration in the peer review of their manuscript, during the initial submission progress. The editorial team will respect these requests so long as this does not interfere with the objective and thorough assessment of the submission.

Peer Review

This journal operates a single-blind review process. All contributions will be initially assessed by the editor for suitability for the journal. Papers deemed suitable are then sent to a minimum of 2 independent expert reviewers to assess the scientific quality of the paper. The Editor is responsible for the final decision regarding acceptance or rejection of articles. The Editor's decision is final.

Editorial policies

This journal uses software for plagiarism detection. We do not tolerate manuscripts that jeopardize ethics in publishing.

The authors are required to comply with the guidelines presented here. The Editorial Board may return the manuscripts that are inconsistent with the guidelines. The authors are also required to present the material in English clear and concise. Although the editorial board and reviewers can give suggestions to improve the clarity of language, this is not its role. Thus, the authors who wish to publish your articles in English must submit them for translation by a qualified person and present us with a certificate. The Editorial Board reserves the right to completely reject manuscripts whose interpretation is significantly hampered by language interests of clarity.

The language of articles published in JABB: English only. Brazilians or authors from countries of Portuguese origin may submit their manuscripts in Portuguese. If the article is accepted for publication, the authors will have to translate it into English.

All manuscripts must be written in clear and grammatically correct English. Please write your text in good English (American or British usage is accepted, but not a mixture of these). For authors who feel their English language manuscript may require editing to eliminate possible grammatical or spelling errors and to conform to correct scientific English, our Editorial board recommends Bioedit (https://www.bioedit.com) or Editage (http://www.editage.com) for edition service of articles into English.

Review of manuscripts: Upon submission, the editor-in-chief enlists reviewers to assist in the evaluation of the manuscript. The review process is confidential, which infers a bond of trust among the authors, editor, and reviewers. The editor is trustee of the manuscript until the review process is completed and ensures that the review process is fair, thorough, and confidential. Reviewers are asked not to share the contents of the manuscript with anyone. Communication with authors should only be through the editor. Reviewers should notify the editor of conflicts of interest that may compromise their ability to provide a fair and unbiased review. Moreover, they must recognize their responsibility in maintaining the confidential nature of the review. The authors will generally be notified of acceptance, rejection, or need for revision within 2-3 weeks of submission.

Acceptance: The acceptance of a paper implies that it has been reviewed and recommended by at least 2 peer reviewers. Editor-in-Chief's decision is final.

Rejected manuscripts: If a manuscript is rejected, the corresponding author may discuss the matter with the editor to the manuscript. If the author believes a rejection decision was erroneous or biased, he/she may appeal the decision directly, in writing, to the editor-in-chief. The editor-in-chief will review the author's reasons, as well as all materials related to the manuscript, and will accept or deny the appeal. A rejected manuscript may be resubmitted for publication only if this course of action has been specifically recommended by the Editor-in-Chief.

Time limit of manuscript revision: A reviewed paper returned to authors for revision must be returned to the editor within 4 weeks. If not, the paper may be treated as a new submission. Under unusual circumstances, editors may extend the revision deadline beyond 4 weeks.
